The contest ran from October 1, 2006 through March 31, 2007. The most popular game, based upon downloads as per contest rules, would win $500 Canadian. The winning game was Jamtris, by Jamos Games.
While many professional game companies participated in the contest, the winning entry was an open-source game, proving yet again the power of the open source movement. Open source software enables developers to share source code and ideas, and collaboration enables rapid development cycles.
"Compared to regular open source computer software, writing an open source mobile phone game has proved to generate very little feedback," said game creator Tomas Larsson. "Users tend to download the software and use it, but not to get involved and interact with the community in the way that happens with computer-based open source software. Therefore, getting feedback from MobileRated.com users and receiving recognition for my creation - in the form of this award - is highly valuable to me and has really motivated me to continue development of the new versions of the Jamtris game."
